Booking a Flight to Sri Lanka
Anyone booking flights to Colombo.
Every South Coast trip starts the same way: a flight into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), just north of Colombo. There's no way around that leg, but there's a real difference between booking it well and booking it in a hurry — the route you take, when you fly, and where you actually search all affect both the price and how rough (or easy) the first day of your trip feels.

Getting to Bandaranaike International (CMB)
CMB is Sri Lanka's only major international airport, sitting roughly 30km north of Colombo and 2.5–3 hours by road from the South Coast towns this site covers. Almost every long-haul route into Sri Lanka involves at least one connection — common hubs include Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and Colombo-direct routes from a handful of South and Southeast Asian cities. Direct long-haul service from Europe or North America is limited, so budget time and attention for the connection itself, not just the flight.
When to book, and when to fly
Sri Lanka's South Coast has a real high season (roughly December through March, when the southwest monsoon is done) and a real low season (the rest of the year, with the wettest stretch around May–June). Flight prices and availability both tighten up in high season, especially around the December holidays — booking a couple of months ahead makes a bigger difference here than on many routes, since seat availability on the popular connecting itineraries genuinely dries up, not just the price.
What actually affects the fare
- Which hub you connect through. Gulf carriers (via Doha/Dubai/Abu Dhabi) are often the most competitively priced options from Europe; Singapore or Kuala Lumpur connections can work well from parts of Asia and Australia.
- How far ahead you book. Especially true for December–March travel — this is when seat availability, not just price, becomes the real constraint.
- Arrival time. An early-morning arrival at CMB gives you the whole first day on the coast; a late-night arrival means your first night is effectively just the transfer. Worth weighing against a fare difference of a few dollars.
Once you've landed: see our airport transfer guide for getting from CMB down to the coast.
Where to actually search
A flight aggregator that searches across airlines and agencies tends to surface better routing options than going straight to one airline's own site, especially for a multi-connection itinerary like this one. We compare real search options on our flight booking page rather than listing a single airline here, since the best carrier for this route genuinely depends on where you're flying from.
None of this needs to be complicated — book with enough runway before high season, pay attention to your connection and arrival time, and the flight becomes the easy part of planning this trip.
