Hostels on the South Coast
The South Coast's hostel scene is small but real — a couple of genuinely social, budget-friendly stays built around communal spaces rather than private comfort. If the trip is about meeting people as much as seeing the coast, this is the category to start with.

What to actually expect
Slow Living Guesthouse and Hostel in Ahangama is exactly what the name suggests — a social, budget-friendly stay a few steps from Ahangama Beach, known for home-cooked meals from its own garden and a shared, communal atmosphere. Star Eyes in Weligama sits just 100 metres from the bay, popular with the solo-traveller and surf crowd looking for a social base near the break. Both are about the shared spaces and the crowd as much as the room itself.
Who this suits
Solo travellers, backpackers on a tighter budget, and anyone who'd rather have a built-in social scene than a private, quiet room. If privacy matters more than meeting people, a guest house gets you a similarly low price with more room to yourself.
What we checked before listing one
- Real reviews. Every property here has a genuine Booking.com and Agoda listing behind it.
- Actually social, not just cheap. We looked for a real communal element — a shared kitchen, a garden, a lounge — not just a low price tag.
- Close to the water. Both are a short walk from real surf/swim access, which matters more here than in most beach destinations.
It's a short list by design — this coast doesn't have a huge hostel scene, so we've kept it to the ones we'd actually send a friend to.
