Currency Exchange & ATMs

Rupees, ATMs, and cards on the South Coast — the short version. There's nothing to book here, just a few habits that save money.

Your Options at a Glance

Usually Best

Local ATM, Foreign Card

Withdraw rupees directly. Expect a possible local fee plus your home bank's own fee, and always decline the machine's offer to charge you in your home currency.

Backup

Exchange Cash at a Bank or Licensed Counter

Fine for US dollars, euros, and pounds in Galle and the larger towns. Compare a couple of counters first and keep your receipt.

Limited

Cards

Accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but guesthouses, beach cafes, and tuk-tuks are mostly cash-only. Always carry rupees.

Why There's No Booking Link Here

Getting rupees isn't something you book in advance, so there's no tracked link on this page. The full walkthrough, including fees, limits, and tipping, is in our Money & Currency guide.
