What to Expect

Udawalawe is built around a large reservoir and open grassland rather than dense forest, which is exactly why elephant sightings here are so consistent — herds gather visibly in the open rather than staying hidden in tree cover. Groups of 20 or more elephants, including calves, are a realistic sighting on most drives, not a lucky exception. Beyond elephants, the park also holds water buffalo, crocodiles, and strong birdlife around the reservoir edges. Unlike Yala, leopards aren't the draw here — this is specifically an elephant park, and it delivers on that specific promise more reliably than almost anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
